Colouring Books for Toddlers (Ages 2–5): What to Look For and Tips (UK) – printable preview

Colouring is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to keep a toddler busy at the kitchen table, on a train or in the run-up to Christmas. But not every colouring book suits small hands. Many are packed with tiny details that a two-year-old cannot fill, which ends in scribbles and frustration. This guide explains what to look for in a colouring book for ages 2 to 5, which crayons and pens work best, how to make colouring time go smoothly, and simple ideas for stocking fillers.

What makes a good colouring book for toddlers?

Colouring by age

Age 2

At two, colouring is mostly about making marks and enjoying colour. Expect scribbles across the lines and that is fine. Chunky crayons and very simple pictures with one main object work best. Sessions may only last a few minutes.

Age 3

Many three-year-olds start trying to stay roughly inside larger shapes and may choose a colour for a reason ("the tractor is green"). Talk about the picture as they go: name the parts, count the wheels and ask what the machine is doing.

Ages 4 to 5

Children in Reception and the year before often enjoy filling smaller areas and adding their own backgrounds such as sky, grass or roads. This is a good age to try felt tips and to let them finish a whole picture in one sitting.

Best crayons and pens for little hands

Tips for calmer colouring time

  1. Pick a set time, such as after lunch or while dinner cooks, so colouring becomes part of the routine.
  2. Put down a wipe-clean mat or an old tablecloth and offer only a few colours at a time.
  3. Praise effort and choices rather than neatness: "I love that purple digger."
  4. Write the date and their name on finished pictures. They make lovely keepsakes and simple gifts for grandparents.
  5. Stop while it is still fun. A short happy session beats a long tearful one.

Colouring books as stocking fillers

A colouring book and a small pack of crayons is an inexpensive stocking filler that keeps little ones occupied on Christmas morning and during long car journeys to visit family. Match the book to their favourite thing, whether that is diggers, tractors or fire engines, and add a few washable pens.
