2027 Goal Planner: How to Set New Year Goals You Will Keep (UK) – printable preview

The quiet days between Christmas and New Year are a lovely time to think about the year ahead. The trouble is that most New Year's resolutions are big, vague and forgotten by February. A goal planner helps you swap "this year I'll get fit" for a clear goal, a reason that matters to you and a small first step you can take this week. This guide shows you how to plan your 2027 goals in about an hour, using a simple printable.

Why resolutions fade, and what to do instead

Resolutions often fail for a few predictable reasons:

A goal planner tackles each of these by slowing you down at the start and giving you regular moments to review.

Step 1: Look back before you look forward

Before you set anything new, spend ten minutes on the year you have just had. Write down three things you are proud of, the best small moments, what was hard and what you learned. Then note anything you would like to leave behind. This stops you repeating goals that did not suit you, and reminds you how much you already managed.

Step 2: Score your Wheel of Life

A Wheel of Life is a circle split into areas such as health, money, work, home, family, friends, fun and personal growth. Give each area a score from 1 to 10 for how satisfied you feel right now, and shade it in. The wheel quickly shows which areas are lopsided. Ask yourself: which two areas would make the biggest difference if they improved? Those are often the best places to aim your goals.

Step 3: Choose a word and your values

Many people like to pick one word for the year, such as "calm", "brave" or "simplify". It acts as a quick filter: when an opportunity comes up, does it fit your word? Alongside this, circle your top five values from a list (for example family, health, security, creativity or adventure). Goals that line up with your values feel worth the effort, even in a damp January.

Step 4: Pick no more than three goals

Now write your goals for 2027. For each one, note why it matters to you and how you will know you have done it. Keep them specific and within your control. Compare:

Step 5: Break each goal into quarters and a first step

A year is a long time, so split each goal into four quarterly milestones. Then decide on one small step you can take this week, such as booking a class, opening a savings pot or putting your trainers by the door. Small first steps build momentum far better than waiting for the perfect Monday.

Next, think about what might get in your way and write an "if-then" plan: "If it is raining, then I will do a 20-minute workout video at home." Planning for obstacles in advance makes it much easier to keep going when they turn up.

Step 6: Track habits and check in

Big goals are made of small, repeated actions. A monthly habit tracker, where you colour in a circle each day you do something, makes progress visible and satisfying. Set yourself a monthly intention too, so each month has a clear focus.

Finally, put four quarterly check-ins in your diary. At each one, look at what went well, what you will change and whether your Wheel of Life scores have moved. It is fine to adjust a goal; it is a plan, not a contract.

Bonus: write a letter to future you

To finish your planning session, write a short letter to yourself to open at the end of 2027. Describe how you hope to feel, what you are looking forward to and a few words of encouragement. It is a lovely thing to read next December, whatever the year brings.
